LEIMERT PARK: THE STORY OF A VILLAGE IN SOUTH CENTRAL L.A. @7PM
Contradiction Dance, 7014 Westmoreland Avenue, Takoma Park, MD
3 blocks east of the Takoma Park Metro Station, just below Carroll & Westmoreland
While Chicago multi-reedist Ernest Khabeer Dawkins is no stranger to DC, as a result of memorable past area performances with Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and Ritual Trio, this is a rare opportunity to see and hear him leading his own group, The New Horizon Ensemble, performing his own original compositions, which deftly juxtaposes jazz, bebop, swing, and the avant garde.
A native Chicagoan, Dawkins joined the famed Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (A.A.C.M.) at the young age of twelve, later rising to becomes the AACM’s President. While no longer at the organization’s helm, he continues to teach music in the AACM’s student program. The New Horizon’s Ensemble was formed in 1978, and has released various recordings, including ‘Chicago Now! 30 Years Of Great Black Music Volumes 1 & 2’, ‘South Side Street Songs’, and ‘After The Dawn Has Risen’.
The illuminating and enlightening film documentary “Leimert Park: The Story Of A Village In South Central L.A.”, as produced and directed by Jeannette Lindsay, and told through the powerful words and music of artists such as pianist Horace Tapscott, drummer Billy Higgins, poet/activist Kamau Daaood, and many others, “…articulates and celebrates the profound struggles and deep spirit of the extraordinary artists and musicians who transformed a few blocks of modest storefronts into a vibrant and inspiring cultural oasis…it is a universal tale of the struggles and triumphs of artists everywhere and the power and importance of art and music in our lives.” This 87 minute film will be immediately followed by an on stage discussion with Ernest Khabeer Dawkins, as moderated by WPFW’s Bob Daughtry, host of the Spiral edition of Overnight Jazz, heard Thursday mornings on 89.3FM radio. The music performance will promptly follow.
100% of proceeds to the artists. More at www.transparentproductionsdc.org.
Contradiction Dance: An exchange between life & dance.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH
36TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE
Contradiction Dance (formerly Sangha),
3 blocks east of the Takoma Park Metro Station, just below Carroll & Westmoreland
Transparent Productions, in collaboration with the House of Musical Traditions, is pleased to announce the Friday, February 27th performance of The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at @ Contradiction Dance, in Takoma Park, Maryland. This ensemble celebrates its 36th year in existence, a now 8-year Black History Month tradition of a DC-area Transparent-presented performance, and the release of “Mama’s House: 35th Anniversary CD Project.”, recorded Live at Sangha.
The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (EHE) was formed 36 years ago. Kahil El’Zabar is the founder of the band and led its first performance in Chicago, in 1973, the year following his return from the University of Ghana. His goal was to combine concepts of African American music making with the earlier roots of traditional African music, yet make it something new. After 36 years, this legendary band is still serving the people worldwide with their special brand of 21st century Griot music. The current band consists of the young trumpet titan, Corey Wilkes, along with Chicago Saxophone legend, Ernest Khabeer Dawkins and the award winning multi percussionist, vocalist, and composer Kahil El’Zabar. EHE’s music conjures a spiritual journey to the inner self, spanning time through multiple expressions that transcend styles and genres, while exhibiting personal virtuosities in making music. Their music has enormous history and incredible love. Aluta Continua!!!…The Ethnic Heritage Ensembleremains a healing force for today’s world. As with all Transparent shows,100% of the proceeds goes directly to the artists.
