Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Whoa! Things are getting busy again... at least the planning part of it. The text below is from a grant we submitted as part of a much bigger environmental dance project. It summarizes our last season nicely and gives a peek at what's ahead for summer/fall/spring 2014-2015.
Directly ahead is Taffety Punk's Enter Ophelia Distracted. We are proud to be their "opening band" on opening night: 6/20 at 8pm. Tickets here: taffetypunk.com
In the 2013-2014 season, we created a new series, #DanceAboutDC, where the company creates and performs site-specific dances in and around the District. #DanceAboutDC aims to put dance in places and spaces where dance is not typically found as a means of expanding the audience for dance in general; and, for our work specifically. #DanceAboutDC has performed at Malcom X Park, The FDR Memorial, Freedom Plaza, Dupont Circle, several random crosswalks, at a grocery store in Brookland, and in the nooks and crannies of Joe's Movement Emporium in Mt. Ranier, Maryland.
The company also premiered an evening length show: "Walk a Mile" at Anacostia Arts Center. The show played for two weeks, again expanding the audience for dance by creating multiple opportunities to see the work. And finally, Contradiction Dance premiered #DanceAboutDC: The Joe's Experience - the latter half of which involved the audience participating in the experience of the show by joining the company onstage, contributing ideas to a Contact Improvisation score, holding props, being props, and dancing with the company in the final piece.
Looking ahead, in the 2014-2015 season, the company will return to both Anacostia Arts Center and Joe's Movement Emporium with fresh moves, excellent dancers, and boundless curiosity.
We've gotten little press, but we got a GREAT on-line review here: https://theartofbalancing.squarespace.com/blog/2014/3/19/best-foot-forward
I look forward to seeing you as we create and grow into the next season, performance, dance, movement and moment.
k.k. :)
