Contradiction Dance Takes No Victims In Fall Performance

F A S H I O N V I C T I M

Co-Directed by Contradiction Dance Artistic Director Kelly King (Mayfield) and Taffety Punk Artistic Director Marcus Kyd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 25, 2012

SILVER SPRING, MD — Contradiction Dance presents F A S H I O N V I C T I M on November 15- 17, 2012 at Round House Theatre-Silver Spring. Tickets range from $10-15, and are available at roundhousetheatre.org. For complete show details, see the schedule of events listed below.

In its most ambitious show yet, Contradiction Dance presents a world-premiere production where dance as theatre smashes into high fashion on the runway. F A S H I O N V I C T I M explores, and exposes, the emotional roller-coaster that is the fashion world, and the many ways in which this culture bleeds into our everyday lives. A performance bursting with multiple forms of art—dance, live singing, dramatic portrayals—the production also strives to feature fashion as art, and a world where we strive to balance conventionality and individuality.

As a company, Contradiction Dance questions and reflects societal assumptions, making a bold
statement. We aim to discover and uncover. We seek to express and explore.

ARTISTIC TEAM
Kelly King (Mayfield) (Director), the Founder and Artistic Director of Contradiction Dance, creates dances for theatre, film, stage, and street... and all the places people go in-between. Playing in several artistic sandboxes at once, while teasing the line between art & entertainment, Kelly brings a collage of interests to each endeavor. Kelly has performed nationally and internationally for several companies, most notably: Contradiction Dance (Artistic Director), CityDance Ensemble (Associate Director), Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Echo Park Contemporary Ballet, JazzDanzDC. She has performed with production companies, including Cirque du Soleil, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Cast of Thousands. Her choreography has been presented and produced by theatre companies/festivals/ corporations including: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Phillips Collection, Round House Theatre, Over The Line Festival, Source Festival, St. Mary's College, Adventure Theatre, GEICO.

Marcus Kyd (Co-Director) is an actor and co-founder and Artistic Director of Taffety Punk Theatre Company. Marcus is co-directing F A S H I O N V I C T I M, lending his expertise, style, and groove to the company. He is a dancer masquerading around Washington as an actor; he is a director who’d rather be in a band. His collaboration with Contradiction Dance simply brings him one step closer to his ultimate dream: dance theatre with fashion-sense live at the 9:30 club.

Veronica Marché Miller (Costume Designer/Illustrator) is a modern-day renaissance woman; Veronica is the story of reinvention-in-progress. In 2011, she left her years-long career in broadcast journalism to fully pursue her creative passions—illustration and design. Veronica is now a graduate student of fashion design at Drexel University in Philadelphia, and has soft-launched her own custom illustration business. A former company member of Contradiction Dance, she served as costume designer for past productions, "Living, Breathing, Human Organism?" and "The Disorder of Things." Veronica is thrilled to return to the fold as Contradiction presents FASHION VICTIM.

Melissa-Leigh Bustamante (Playwright) has appeared as an actor and/or choreographed in many productions in the DC metro area, having worked with such companies as: The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Forum Theatre, The Keegan Theatre, Adventure Theatre, Cherry Red Productions, Bouncing Ball Productions, Adventure Theatre, Rorschach Theatre, The Source Theatre Festival, The Capitol Fringe Festival, and Catalyst Theater, with whom she was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Choreography.
